The body of C2 is the largest of the cervical vertebrae.  Its prominent spinous process is palpable beneath the occiput.  C2 (a.k.a. “axis”) provides rotation at its superior articulation with the lateral masses of C1 and some flexion, tilt and rotation at its inferior articulation with C3.  Its superior projection, the odontoid (or “dens”), is stabilized to C1 by transverse and alar ligaments.
