Intertrochanteric Fracture


Background

     

      An intertrochanteric fracture is an extracapsular hip fracture of the proximal femur.  The fracture line extends between the greater and lesser trochanters.  It is a common injury which most often affects elderly patients with a greater incidence in women, likely related to osteoporosis.
