The Segond fracture may be diagnosed on standard knee x rays, but the avulsion fragment may be difficult to see.  It appears as a small, vertically oriented, avulsed bony fragment involving the lateral aspect of the proximal lateral tibia.  The lesion is often diagnosed subsequently by MRI.
