Pilon Fracture

ED Management

Open fractures require antibiotics, tetanus prophylaxis, and emergent orthopedics consultation for surgical management.

Definitive surgery to restore the fragments and stabilize the fracture is usually delayed to allow the soft tissues to recover from the traumatic injury. Therefore, patients with isolated closed pilon fractures can be splinted, made non-weightbearing, and given rapid orthopedics follow-up following orthopedic consultation.
