Diagnosis is by standard ankle X rays (AP, lateral and mortise views).  The clinician should also consider other radiographs of the affected limb and spine, to evaluate for occult fractures with high impact mechanisms.  CT better depicts the fracture pattern and should be performed if requested by the orthopedic consultant.
