It is a pleasure to appoint D. Mark Courtney, MD as Director of Research, in charge of research operations. He will oversee the administration of research studies, ensuring good coordination, communication, and implementation of research projects.  It is my responsibility, as chair, to approve studies in the department, so I am asking Dr. Courtney to ensure that there is a coordinated, sound, effective process for the conduct of studies. He will work with Brian Spector, Department Administrator, Lori McGee, Research Administrator, the research assistants, and all of you to continue to advance these goals. He has done a fantastic job in recent years, it is right to formally recognize him with this title.

Jim Kyriacou, MD, PhD will remain as Research Director as well. He offers top notch skills in study concept, design, development of methodology, data analysis and interpretation, and manuscript preparation. He is called upon for his expertise by many colleagues outside of our department. His continued efforts will help grow our research program.

It is a pleasure to also recognize the many others who are emerging as nationally important investigators and noted academicians. In order for your careers to continue to flourish, the right departmental research infrastructure must be in place and a collegial environment must be fostered. Formalizing Dr. Courtney's role advances our research program and, utilizing everyone’s skills, we will deliver on the great promise that lies ahead.
