Pain and Emergency Medicine Initiative (PEMI) I – Clinical Epidemiology and Outcomes Study Dr. Tanabe is a site co-investigator for the large, 20-center project led by Knox Todd, MD, MPH. This project has enrolled approximately 800 patients in the United States and Canada and will describe pain-related aspects of the natural history of illnesses or injuries that are treated in the emergency department (ED) in patients who are subsequently discharged home. Characteristics, Treatment and Referral Patterns for ED patients with Sickle Cell Pain Crisis Dr. Tanabe is the Principal Investigator of a multi-site project with Beth Israel, NY and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The aim of the project is to describe the analgesic care provided to adult patients who present to the ED with a sickle cell pain episode. The project will compare the care provided to the recommendation from the American Pain Society Guideline on the treatment of pain for sickle cell patients with an acute pain crisis. Drs’ Myers and Zosel (NU EM residents) are participating in the project as co-investigators. |
