Undetected Hypertension

Hypertension Research

Undetected Hypertension in the Emergency Department
This project is funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and aims 1) to determine the proportion of ED patients with no history of HTN and two or more blood pressure readings  >140/90 during an ED visit, who demonstrate sustained BP elevations when measured at home during the following week and 2) identify the socio-demographic and clinical characteristics (e.g., family history of HTN, pain, anxiety, body mass index) associated with sustained blood pressure elevation when measured at home during the week following the ED visit.  Approximately 180 patients will be prospectively enrolled, given a home blood pressure monitor and asked to record BP readings for one week. We believe this project will help identify which patients who may benefit from screening, patient education and referral for BP re-check.
