Community Medicine

The Department of Emergency Medicine has on staff Drs. George Chiampas and Sanjeev Malik both board certified in emergency medicine and fellowship trained in Sports Medicine.   Both hold Certificates of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine.  Since their arrival in 2008, together, they have been active in expanding the role of sports medicine within the Department of Emergency Medicine at Northwestern. 

Drs. Chiampas and Malik have expanded the musculoskeletal curriculum for the EM Residency Program with an enhanced orthopedic rotation and the development of a sports medicine selective.  Additionally, they have written scholarly articles on Heat illness, Shoulder Emergencies, and Acute Mountain Sickness accepted for publication in 2010. 

In addition to their commitments to the Emergency Department and training programs, both Dr. Chiampas and Dr. Malik have been active on a national and local level with event coverage.

Hustle Up the Hancock

More than 80 Chicago-area medical professionals, students, and residents served as part of the medical volunteer team for the Hustle Up the Hancock on February 27 2011. Medical directors from the Emergency Department of Northwestern Memorial Hospital led the team, including George Chiampas, DO (third from left), and Sanjeev Malik, MD (fifth from left). The event, which supports the Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago, raised more than $1 million toward lung disease research.

 

Shamrock Shuffle
The 2011 8k Shamrock Shuffle was held Sunday, April 10. This year, the race benefited youth running programs in Chicago and had about 40,000 participants registered. Dr. George Chiampas

Although Dr. Chiampas has only been with our department a few short years, his accomplishments in the sports medicine community continue to distinguish him as a leader.  He is very involved both locally and internationally with the sports medicine community.  He is the Team Physician for the US Soccer Men’s National Team , has recently traveled to Denmark, Holland with the Men’s US National Team, and authored the medical chapter for the US bid for the 2018/2022 World Cup Soccer Championship.   Dr. Chiampas also plays an active role in Northwestern University Athletics as Assistant Team Physician, providing emergency and sports medicine care to Division I athletes.  Dr. Chiampas also lectures at the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine.  This past year he also created the first Multiple Marathon Medical Malpractice Policy in conjunction with the United States Track and Field (USATF), incorporating the Chicago, Boston, New York, Twin Cities, and Houston Marathons. 

  • In addition to being a Team Physician, Dr. Chiampas has several key medical director positions with large Chicago events. 
  • Medical director for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and Shamrock Shuffle, which entails coordinating over 1,200 medical volunteers and collaborating with local EMS and City of Chicago agencies for one of the largest marathons in the world. 
  • Co-Medical director for the “Hustle Up the Hancock” in 2010, where more than 4,000 participants raised more than $1 million toward lung disease research.   
  • Medical director for the Chicago Police 5K memorial Run to Remember, which raises money for families of wounded and killed Chicago Police Officers.  
  • Medical coordinator for Girls on the Run, which raises awareness for fitness and running for young girls.  
  • President of the American Road Race Medical Society.

Dr. Sanjeev  Malik
Dr. Malik rejoined the department in 2008 after completing a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine.  Dr. Malik is a 2007 graduate of the Northwestern Emergency Medicine Residency Program and was one of its most highly regarded chief residents.  When the opportunity arose to recruit Dr. Malik back to his alma mater as a member of the faculty group while also fostering his sport medicine interests we were very pleased he chose to come back to us.
Dr. Malik’s Sport Medicine Duties include:
 
  • Team physician and doping control officer for US Soccer.
  • Co-Medical director for the “Hustle Up the Hancock” in 2010, where more than 4,000 participants raised more than $1 million toward lung disease research.  
  • Plays a key role in event coverage for the Chicago Marathon and Shamrock Shuffle for the past several years.
  • Medical Director for the Cancer is Colorblind 5k charity race, benefiting the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern University. 

    In addition to Dr. Malik’s sport medicine duties he is also Assistant Medical Director of the Emergency Department.  He is responsible with the medical director for the EDs daily operations and is on numerous committees representing the interests of the department.  These include:  Stroke Quality Management, ED Quality Management, Conference Coordinator for Morbidity and Mortality, Pharmacy P+T Antibiotic.
