December 2012
Congratulations to David Salzman, MD, M.Ed. (NU EM '09) for the new letters at the end of his name: M.Ed. Dr. Salzman successfully defended his Master's thesis, which involved the study of a simulation curriculum in emergency medicine for non-EM housestaff while on rotation in the ED. Dr. Salzman earned his degree from the University of Cincinnati.
Congratulations to Dr. Christopher Richards (NU EM '12) who has been selected for induction in Alpha Omega Alpha at Northwestern University! Dr. Richards is currently in his first year of two fellowships at Northwestern, Health Services/Outcomes Research and Emergency Medical Services. Congrats, Chris!

Dr. Yuemi An-Grogan (EM Simulation Fellow '13) has been accepted to the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship at Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago / Northwestern McGaw Center for Graduate Medical Education
Dr. Usha Periyanayagam (NU EM '13) has accepted a position with the International Emergency Medicine Fellowship at Harvard University / Brigham and Women's Hospital
Dr. Heather Costello (NU EM '09) and Dr. Rachel Norris (NU EM '08) have both been accepted to the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at University of Chicago
All of the above fellowships are very competitive -- we are extremely proud of these members of our Northwestern EM family. Congratulations Yuemi, Usha, Heather and Rachel!
November 2012
Dr. Chan published her first OpEd in US News and World Report. It discusses the need for learning/evaluation and calls for more investment in these types of efforts. This is also part of a national program called the OpEd Project, hosted by Northwestern and other universities this year. The article can be found here.

The EM faculty at Lake Forest presented Dr. Charles Pearce with the first annual "Resident of the Year" award. Congratulations, Dr. Pearce!

Congratulations to Krista Brucker for receiving support form the Global Humanitarian Initiative for her ongoing work at Clinic Esperanza. This is a fantastic recognition of her dedicated and high quality commitment to supporting and promoting the clinic's development. She is also one of the few residents awarded this support within the Northwestern Feinberg Community and the first ever EM clinician to be awarded this funding.

Dr. Nicholas Hartman has been selected as one of the 2012 EMRA SA Travel Scholarship Award recipients. Congratualations, Dr. Hartman!
Dr. Amer Aldeen was selected as one of the 20 scholars from Northwestern University for the Public Voices Fellowship. This prestigious award offers training in communication, media relations. Congratulations, Dr. Aldeen!

On Thursday, July 26, the Department was proud to welcome Class of 2007 alumni Dr. Britney Anderson and Dr. Amy Zosel as Grand Rounds guest lecturers. Dr. Anderson is currently the Associate Residency Director at the University of Colorado-Denver and she spoke about "Professional Identity Formation." Dr. Zosel is an Assistant Professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin and her lecture was titled "Herbals and Dietary Supplements Toxicities." It was great to have our grads with us!

Congratulations to EM Department Chair Dr. James Adams and EM Department Administrator Brian Spector, MPA, who planned this year’s AACEM/AAAEM national meeting in Washington, DC on April 2-4th. This year’s conference brought together over 130 EM chairs and their administrators from across the country to discuss current issues facing the specialty, network, participate in workshops on leadership, and hear from leaders at the national level, including AHRQ, NHLBI, ABEM, AAMC, and MGMA.
Congratulations to Katherine Torres, Executive Assistant to the Chair, and Arthur Knight, Assistant to the Vice Chair, DA and the Faculty Affairs Resource Coordinator, whose administrative support was instrumental in the months leading up to the conference, as well as staffing of the event a huge success. Congratulations to Dr. Usha Periyanayagam, who has been selected as a participant in the Yale/Stanford Johnson & Johnson Global Health Scholars Program. She will travel to Indonesia to complete a clinical rotation at Alam Sehat Lestari in Sukadana, West Kalimantan, Borneo. You can find more details about the program, here.

Febuary 2012

In celebration of EM Resident Appreciation Day 2012, the faculty of Northwestern Emergency Medicine Residency gifted each resident with a custom fleece-lined jacked. We celebrated Resident Appreciation Day a little early, on February 29th, so that the residents have a treat to look forward to on the morning of the ABEM In-Training Exam.

Dr. Rahul Khare has returned from his third volunteer trip to Haiti, where he gave lectures on Emergency Medicine and worked side by side with Haitian doctors at the Justinian University Hospital in Cap Haitian. You can read a full article about his experience here, or look through the blog he kept during his time there.

Congratulations to Dr. Usha Periyanayagam, who just took first place, and three thousand dollars in prize money, in the Resident Research Competition at the AAEM Scientific Assembly in San Diego! Usha expertly presenter her project, "Predictors of Assault in Female Trauma Patients in Illinois", fielding numerous questions with oustanding detail and great poise. She really did a wonderful job.
Rahul Khare, MD, was interviewed live on Fox Chicago about cold weather safety. You can watch the interview here to see his commentary on everything from minor like sprains from slips and falls to major concerns like hypthothermia, as well as various tips for how to stay safe.

Congratulation to the members of our faculty and staff who will be publishing Patient Input into the Development and Enhancement of Emergency Department Discharge Instructions: a Focus Group Study in the Journal of Emergency Medicine. Contributing authors include James Adams MD, Barb Buckley RN, Kirsten Engel MD, Victoria Forth MA, Danielle McCarthy MD, Michael Schmidt MD, and Paula Tanabe, PhD MPH RN.

Congratulations to Peter Pang, MD, who was recently selcted to recieve a KL2 Award, begining in the summer of 2012. This is an NIH award through the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Science Institute (NUCATS). Peter will be part of the Multridisciplinary Clinical and Translational SCientist (MCTS) Scholars program.You can read more about the MCTS and NUCATS here.
