Feinberg School of Medicine Competencies
The Feinberg School of Medicine is incorporating a competency-based framework for the Feinberg School’s MD curriculum, beginning with the current M1 class. The concept of competency-based educational outcomes assessment was introduced through the initiative developed by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education several years ago, and is now embodied in the six ACGME General Competencies in use throughout US residency programs. Each of the FSM learning objectives for a course or clerkship will be related to several over-arching competencies that guide the entire curriculum.  We will work to develop increasingly reliable and rigorous methods of assessing students’ achievement of each of the general competencies, and use the data on educational outcomes to guide further improvements in the curriculum.

Two New Recipients of Augusta Webster Grant

Christine Park, MD, is an assistant professor of anesthesiology.  Dr. Park’s protocol, Training and assessing novice anesthesiology resident competencies using a simulation-based curriculum, focuses on anesthesiology residents and has implications for patient safety.  This is a three-year project.

Melissa Brannen, MD, is an instructor in pediatric critical care in the department of pediatrics.  Her study, Using Simulation to Teach Leadership Skills to Pediatric Fellows, was funded for two years.
