Description of Interests

Gina Vozenilek has always been interested in both science and the humanities. Her work as a science writer, medical editor, grant “fixer,” and educator has focused on distilling complicated ideas into clear, accessible prose. She believes that writing is a fundamental part of a critical thinking process that clarifies and shapes ideas, rather than some elusive art that captures fully formed thoughts on paper. She has successfully reengineered a tried-and-true method from creative writing pedagogy—“the workshop”—to encourage her students to articulate feedback about their fellow writers’ scientific documents. In this way they offer each other valuable perspective but also gain clarity about what is successful and unsuccessful in their own writing. This method also fosters a supportive community of writers that Gina hopes can enhance scholarly productivity across the Institute. She is excited to be working with faculty and students in the Center for Healthcare Studies on their writing projects, providing individual mentorship and group instruction. She also serves as Course Director for a grant writing workshop in the spring.
