Greetings from the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine (NUFSM). Our Department offers outstanding advanced and categorical residency training programs. Our residents gain clinical experience at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the new Prentice Women's Hospital, which opened in October 2007, and Children's Memorial Hospital, which although currently located 3 miles northwest of NUFSM, is being built adjacent to the Prentice Women's Hospital. We look forward to the opening of the new Children's Memorial Hospital in 2012 when residents who match in our program will train in the new, state-of-the-art medical facility. I encourage you to learn more about the developments of Northwestern Medicine by watching this video.
Residents will benefit from this exciting time of innovation, growth, and development in the department and at our affiliated institutions. Our Department continues to develop research and clinical care programs in many areas such as the neurosciences, pain medicine, obstetric anesthesiology, critical care medicine, cardiac anesthesiology, pediatric anesthesiology, and regional anesthesia. Our excellent educational program is enhanced through our faculty members’ research in educational methods, including simulation where our residents have frequent educational sessions in our Northwestern Center for Clinical Simulation during their entire residency. Through the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University our residents receive broad, comprehensive exposure to practices encompassing all aspects of anesthesiology. Instruction, guidance, and mentorship come from enthusiastic faculty members from a wide variety of backgrounds and wide-ranging interests and skills.
Graduates of Northwestern's Anesthesiology Residency Program are thriving. Many are leaders in academic and community practices and several of them are either Chairs or Vice-Chairs in major U.S. academic departments. Building on more than 40 years of recognized excellence in clinical education, we are confident that our graduates are consummate clinical anesthesiologists, that they fulfill the role of consultant in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, and that they are prepared to assume leadership roles in guiding our exciting and vibrant specialty through the ever-changing health care environment. To quote our current American Society of Anesthesiologists President Dr. Roger Moore, "There has never been a better time in history to be an anesthesiologist!"1
