The Neurosurgical Anesthesiology Fellowship is designed to provide advanced clinical training in the surgical and endovascular management of complex intracranial disease and the surgical treatment of complex acute and chronic spine disorders. Each fellow is provided an in depth experience of intraoperative evoked potential monitoring, in addition to individually-tailored rotations in the neurosurgical intensive care unit. Fellows will also learn interventional radiology techniques. Fellows spend one month at Children’s Memorial Hospital to learn pediatric neurosurgical techniques and a combined month to learn research methodologies, which provides the basis for an optional second year of fellowship training dedicated to bench, translational, or outcomes research in the neurosciences. The Department of Anesthesiology works very closely with the Department of Neurological Surgery, an internationally recognized center for the surgical treatment of complex intracranial vascular disease, skull base surgery, and spine disorders, in addition to the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center, and the Northwestern University Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, which provide regional and national expertise for their respective intracranial pathologies. Clinical and laboratory time will augment the fellow’s educational experience. Most of the research will be clinical in nature; hence, the research will be based on patient care. If there is neurosurgical anesthesia research taking place in the laboratory, fellows will be allotted time to participate. The fellow will be counseled before the start of fellowship and a major discussion will take place between him/her and the neurosurgical staff overseeing the research. This will include the chief of the neurosurgical program, the director of research in the division of neurosurgical anesthesia and the director of research in the department of anesthesia. - Four months in cranial surgery service (NMH)
- Four months in spine surgery service (NMH)

- One month of research (NMH). Fellows will design and finish the research work conducted throughout the year.

The 80-hour week rules will be maintained at all times. In general fellows will work four days a week with one non clinical day. Fellows who participate in the management of an interesting case will be compensated for such time during the regular working hours. Fellows will take home beeper call one-two weekend days. Fellows will report to work only for major neurosurgical cases, such as aneurysm clipping, stinting or coiling. Hours worked during a call shift will count towards the fellow’s 80 hour week. Fellows will be working solely under the supervision of the attending and other times they will have a resident working with them, which provides the fellows teaching and supervisory opportunities. Both residents and fellows are supervised by the attending. Fellows will not take call at Children Memorial Hospital. Fellows may take call during their Research month.
