Greetings from the Department Chair
Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine (NUFSM), where we offer outstanding advanced and categorical residency training programs. Our residents gain clinical experience at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (which includes Prentice Women's Hospital), and the recently opened Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, thus enabling our residents to learn at three exceptional hospitals that are, not only academically affiliated, but literally connected to one another. Our Department is part of Northwestern Medicine, a vibrant academic medical community in the heart of downtown Chicago. I encourage you to learn more about Northwestern Medicine by visiting http://northwesternmedicine.org/.
Residents will benefit from this exciting time of innovation, growth, and development in our Department and at our affiliated institutions. The Department continues to develop research and clinical care programs in many areas such as the neurosciences, pain medicine, obstetric anesthesiology, critical care medicine, cardiac anesthesiology, pediatric anesthesiology, and regional anesthesia. Our excellent educational program is enhanced through our faculty members’ research in educational methods, including high-fidelity simulation where our residents have educational sessions in the Northwestern Center for Clinical Simulation throughout their entire residency.
Through the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University our residents receive broad, comprehensive exposure to practices encompassing all aspects of anesthesiology. Instruction, guidance, and mentorship come from enthusiastic faculty members from a wide variety of backgrounds and wide-ranging interests and skills. Additionally, anesthesiology residents participate in clinical research studies, quality projects, and hospital committees; present abstracts of their work at the Midwest Anesthesia Residents Conference; and serve as representatives in the resident components of professional societies.
Graduates of Northwestern's Anesthesiology Residency Program are thriving. Many are leaders in academic and community practices and several are Chairs or Vice-Chairs in major U.S. academic departments. Building on 45 years of recognized excellence in clinical education, we are confident that our graduates are consummate clinical anesthesiologists, that they fulfill the role of consultant in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, and that they are prepared to assume leadership roles in guiding our exciting and stimulating specialty through the ever-changing health care environment.
