Feinberg’s Researchers Named to Clarivate Analytics’ List

Twelve Faculty Named to 'Highly Cited' List for 2025

Galter Library

Each year, Clarivate Analytics recognizes a select group of researchers whose publications rank among the top one percent by citations for their field and year in the Web of Science Core Collection. For the 2025 Highly Cited Researchers list, Clarivate designated 7,131 awards to 6,868 individual researchers.

Across Northwestern University, 36 researchers were recognized on the 2025 list. Northwestern ranked 34th among the top 52 global institutions that serve as primary affiliations to Highly Cited Researchers, highlighting the university’s broad scholarly influence across disciplines.

Twelve Feinberg School of Medicine faculty members were recognized in 2025 across multiple research categories:

How Highly Cited Researchers are Identified

Clarivate identifies Highly Cited Researchers through a data-driven evaluation of publications from the past eleven years, selecting those whose work ranks among the top one percent by citations for their field and year of publication. In addition to citation counts, Clarivate incorporates other quantitative indicators, qualitative review, and expert judgment to ensure that selections reflect meaningful and wide-ranging research influence.

The Highly Cited Researchers list is organized around the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) fields, which group research outputs into distinct disciplinary areas. The number of researchers selected in each field depends on field size and citation patterns, resulting in thresholds that vary across disciplines. Clarivate also identifies researchers with crossfield impact whose influential work spans multiple areas but does not meet the threshold for any single ESI field. These individuals qualify through a normalized assessment that aggregates their highly cited contributions across disciplines.

The 2025 thresholds for the specific ESI fields in which Feinberg’s 12 recognized researchers were identified are provided below:
