New NIH Director: Monica Bertagnolli, MD

Monica M. Bertagnolli, MD, started November 9 as the 17th director of the National Institutes of Health, the nation’s biomedical research agency and largest public funder of biomedical research in the world. She is the first surgeon and second woman to hold the position. Nominated by President Biden, Bertagnolli was confirmed on a bipartisan basis by the U.S. Senate on November 7. Growing up in rural Wyoming, Bertagnolli experienced and saw firsthand the challenges faced by rural communities to access medical care and participate in medical research. Due to that lived experience, equity is a core value that drives all her efforts, which includes ensuring NIH research is equitable and accessible to all people from all walks of life regardless of income or zip code. Prior to serving as NIH director, Bertagnolli was a cancer surgeon for over 45 years. She was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2021.

You Are Invited to Participate in a Pilot of Data Management and Sharing Plan Templates

The Federal Demonstration Partnership (FDP) is an association of federal agencies, research policy organizations and academic research institutions with the mission of streamlining the administration of federally-sponsored research and create resources that are available to the research enterprise. NIH has worked closely with them to implement their Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy that went into effect in January 2023. They are seeking feedback on two different templates that will assist in the DMS Plan. These templates are available on the FDP website to try. They encourage researchers to use the alpha and bravo template versions when preparing DMS plans, and submit the FDP survey with feedback on their experience.
