ACCESS TO STUDENT RECORDS

Congress enacted FERPA in 1974 to specify what information in a student’s educational record can be disclosed to whom and by what means. The educational record includes all paper or electronic information directly related to a student and maintained by the Feinberg School of Medicine or the University. This includes, but is not limited to, information in the Office of the Registrar and offices of individual course directors and faculty members including the clerkship performance evaluations submitted by residents and faculty members to assist the clerkship director in compiling an evaluation and grade. FERPA excludes private notes made by a faculty member about a student that have not been shared with anyone else. A student may examine his or her educational file by requesting access from the Registrar. The University’s FERPA policy is available from the Registrar or on the University’s Website at www.registrar.northwestern.edu/ferpa.
