NeurologyNeurology

The Ken and Ruth Davee Department of Neurology and Clinical Neurological Sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine offers fully accredited graduate medical programs in adult and pediatric neurology.

Qualifications

Residents may enter the adult neurology program after completing at least one year in an approved internal medicine program or a transitional program with at least eight months of internal medicine.

Adult Neurology

First-year residents are responsible for the care of neurologic patients at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. They participate in ward and consultation services.

Second- and third-year residents supervise junior house staff members and provide consultation to emergency medicine and other medical services. They also gain experience in pediatric, neurology, clinical neurophysiology, neuroradiology, neuropathology, and other individualized elective programs. Senior residents have approximately eight months of electives in clinical neurophysiology (electroencephalography, electromyography, evoked responses), neuroradiology, neuropathology, or other individualized electives.

Clinical experience is enhanced through clinics at Northwestern Memorial, Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, and Children's Memorial. Each resident maintains a clinic and participates in specialty clinics in Alzheimer's disease/behavioral neurology, epilepsy, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular disorders, neuro-oncology, neuro-ophthalmology, neuro-otology, sleep disorders, and stroke.

Pediatric Neurology

Pediatric neurology fellows complete a clinical year in adult neurology at Northwestern Memorial and Jesse Brown VA Medical Center and one pediatric neurology clinical year at Children's Memorial. The third year is spent on elective rotations. Each fellow maintains his or her own pediatric neurology clinic and participates in specialty clinics in epilepsy and muscular dystrophy. In addition, clinics at Northwestern Memorial provide adult neurology experience.

Educational and Research Programs

Residents participate in morning reports with the chair, grand rounds, clinical case conferences, a basic neuroscience course, subspecialty conferences, and various conferences on neurology topics.

The program presents a full range of neurodiagnostic techniques, including advanced neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and vascular and sleep studies.

Residents are encouraged to pursue independent research with the help of senior faculty members who conduct many basic science and clinical projects.

Application Requirements

Residents may enter the adult neurology program after completing at least one year in an approved internal medicine program or a transitional program with at least eight months of internal medicine. Six positions are offered in each of the three years of clinical adult neurology. Three positions are available every year in pediatric neurology.

Applications are processed through the National Resident Matching Program, 2450 N Street, NW, Washington, D.C., 20037-1127; 202/828-0566 or toll free, 866/617-5838; fax 202/828-4797; www.nrmp.org.
