Diagnostic Radiology

The Department of Radiology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine offers graduate education in diagnostic radiology. The four-year residency in diagnostic radiology provides an integrated learning experience that combines patient care, study, and research. Upon completion of the program, residents are well prepared for the American Board of Radiology examination and for a subspecialty fellowship, if so desired.  Residents are selected based on information from the application form, scholastic records, letters of recommendation, and personal interviews. All appointments in the program are subject to annual review.

Residency Program

The principal objectives of the diagnostic radiology residency program are to produce well-prepared radiologists capable of providing first-rate radiological services for their patients and referring physicians; instill a desire for continued professional growth; and provide a sufficiently sound and broad fundamental base in diagnostic radiology, diagnostic radiologic physics, radiobiology, and nuclear medicine to assure that these goals will be achieved.

The program involves all phases of diagnostic and interventional radiology, including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, neuro, pediatric, and plain film radiology as well as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, mammography, nuclear medicine, and ultrasound.   Residents also have the opportunity to attend the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology Radiology/Pathology Correlation Course in Washington, D.C.

Residents gain experience in diagnostic radiology at Children's Memorial Hospital, Evanston Hospital, and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. These facilities operate primarily in a filmless PACS environment.

Application Requirements

Residents may enter the program after completing one year of postgraduate training in an accredited transitional program or after one year in a program that requires at least five years of postgraduate training.

Positions Offered

Eight or nine first-year residents are selected each year through the National Resident Matching Program, for a total of 36 residency positions during the four years.
