Psychiatry Clerkship

Welcome to the Psychiatry clerkship!

During this four-week rotation, you will see patients with mood disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, personality disorders, delirium and dementia, and other psychiatric illnesses.  We hope that you will become comfortable talking with a wide variety of patients, and that you will develop strong interviewing skills that will help you in any specialty.

Students are assigned to either inpatient psychiatry or consultation-liaison psychiatry at NMH, ENH, or the VA.  On inpatient psychiatry, you will follow patients throughout their hospital admission, which can range from a few days to a few weeks.  On consultation-liaison, you will evaluate patients on the medical, surgical, and Ob/Gyn floors, providing psychiatric consultation to the primary medical team.  All students are also assigned to an outpatient clinic, where they have the opportunity to work with psychiatric patients in a less acute setting.  On Tuesday afternoons, all students come together for lectures at NMH.

Students at NMH or the VA take call at NMH, where you will evaluate patients in the emergency department and provide emergency consultation on the medical floors.   Students take three weekday calls and one weekend call during the four week rotation.  Because the students on the C/L service work longer hours than those on inpatient psychiatry, they take one fewer call than other students.  Students at ENH take call at ENH, with the exception of one weekend call at NMH.  Call is from 5pm-11pm on weekdays, and from 9am-11pm on weekends.  The morning after call, students present their cases at morning report.
