Conferences

Required bi-weekly meetings with Dr. Evans in Feinberg 13-742 are at 1:30pm on Tuesday and 11:00am on Thursday.

Sub-I Conferences: we will meet 2 times each week on Tuesday & Thursday in Feinberg 13-704 conference room. The conferences will be interactive. Typically, we will alternate between a student presented case and a case presented by the preceptor. Attendance is mandatory. If you have an urgent patient care situation (such as a code or ICU transfer) then patient care comes first… but you must notify me by text page why you were unable to attend. More than 1 absence could affect your final grade.

Northwestern Service Conferences: since you are expected to act like an intern … then we expect that you will attend daily conferences in a similar manner. You should learn to make educational time a priority during your training as a student, as well as next year.

Morning Report: Each morning at 7:30AM is a chief resident run morning report. This is typically a detailed review of an interesting NMH case. Interns (and sub-interns) are invited each day but not required to attend. Patient care responsibilities come first. However, we expect that you should find time to attend this conference at least twice per week (the more the better). This is usually the best educational conference of the day and the top level interns can always be found here on a regular basis. If you attend morning report, then it is expected that you will listen closely and follow the case. It is never acceptable to sit in the back row and cause a distraction. Falling asleep or any other witnessed unprofessional behavior will not be tolerated (yes, this has occurred in the past). Any reports of this type of behavior will be reflected in a less than satisfactory final grade.

Noon Conference: Each day (except Tuesday) at noon is a conference run by the Medicine Department in Feinberg 13-742. Mondays are typically faculty lectures. Wednesdays are resident presentations. Thursdays is “Firm Conference” where a key clinical faculty member will present a case for group discussion. Fridays are split between resident CPC’s, M&M, Autopsy Conferences and Ethics cases. Noon conference is not required … but it is often a good learning experience and sub-I’s are encouraged to attend as many as possible. The general rule of thumb for noon conference: if you come for the food… you must stay for the conference. Do NOT let your clerkship director see you grab a plate of food and run off to socialize. If you choose to skip the lecture, then please leave the food for someone who is attending the conference.

Grand Rounds: Tuesdays at 7:30AM (from Sept through May). Sub-I’s are expected to attend this weekly conference. The exception would be night-float pick-up days when ward duties make this difficult. As with any conference, patients come first and any unstable issue should be dealt with before conference. You should aim to make it to at least 50% of the Grand Rounds conferences while you are on service.
