Surgery ClerkshipThe Surgery Clerkship is a 12-week clerkship designed to train the third year student to recognize physical conditions and disease processes that represent surgical emergencies, to provide an understanding of when surgical consultation is appropriate for patients and to introduce the student to the principles of surgery as practiced by all surgeons regardless of specialty. During the clerkship, the student will have a 4-week rotation in General Surgery (abdominal based), a 4-week ambulatory rotation in three subspecialty clinics and a 4-week in-depth "selective" subspecialty experience. All students will have either an inpatient-based or ambulatory-based rotation in Orthopedics and Urology. All students will have either an inpatient-based or ambulatory-based rotation in Orthopedics, Urology, and Otolaryngology. Students can be assigned to NMH, McNeal, CMH, or VA during the clerkship. The didactic curriculum that supplements the clinical experiences includes a series of presentations on Wednesday and Friday afternoons including interactive sessions, physical exam sessions, case-based sessions and lectures. Small Group Sessions for skills acquisitions are lead by out Nurse Instructor during the clerkship. Complementary experiences include a suture session during orientation, an airway management session in the simulation lab and a collaborative on-line learning module for order writing. The clerkship is administered by the Clerkship Directors as a interdepartmental effort of the Departments of Surgery, Genitourinary Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery, Neurologic Surgery and Anesthesia. Students are assessed with a written midterm examination, an OSCE (standardized patient examination), the NBME surgery subject examination and clinical performance appraisals by residents and faculty.
