Emergency Medicine Orientation Information

Shifts 

  • 15-8 hour shifts
  • 3-4 nights
  • 4-5 weekend shifts
  • 1 2-hour triage shift
  • Arrive on time and participate in sign out
  • You may see any patient
  •  Present to attending or senior EM Resident
  •  Function as Sub Intern
  •  Make all necessary calls and perform all necessary procedures
  •  Appropriate professional dress required including ID

Student Lectures

  •  Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. for weeks 1 & 2, 1-3 p.m. for weeks 3 & 4
  •  Week 4 consist of a 1 hour Follow-Up conference and 1 hr. ethics professional discussion        
  •  Attendance Required

Simulator

  •   Tuesday morning or afternoon session
  •   Mandatory
  •   One Tuesday of the month-announced at orientation
  •   Check Blackboard for time, location and directions

Procedure log

  •   Must have signature and date for each of the mandatory procedures
  •   Keep track of any additional procedures performed in log book or on procedure sheet.
  •   Turn in completed book/form on day of exam

Attending List

  • Maintain a list of attendings and residents with whom you work
  • Traxion/Patient log
  • NMH students will track patients on Traxion
  • Log in for all patients whom you are caring for
  • Create your own login and password at orientation
  • ENH students will track patients in log book

Follow-up log

  • Track 2-3 patients per week
  • Follow up on patients care while in house
  • May choose any patient
  • Brief summary of the problem in your log book

Reading

  • Textbook provided
  • Course objectives provided as guide to textbook reading

Final Examination

  • Multiple Choice
  • Last Friday of rotation
  • 60% correct to pass the exam
  • Must Pass to pass clerkship

Mentors

  •  Small group assigned to attending
  • Additional contact for questions or concerns
  • Attending will review your shift reports and meet with you if problems arise
  •  Facilitators for small group follow-up presentations

Evaluations

  • Must have one per shift
  • Should be given to attending and senior resident on the shift
  • 2 nursing evaluations
  • Extras are available if needed

Attendance

  • Must be present and on time for all mandatory events
  • Absences must be excused and are at the discretion of Dr. Kontrick
