Porter and Jick, Letter to the Editor (1980) A one-paragraph 1980 letter to the editor of the New England Journal of Medicine sharing findings "that despite widespread use of narcotic drugs in hospitals, the development of addiction is rare in medical patients with no history of addiction." The letter, written by a Boston University doctor (Jick) and his graduate student (Porter), was widely cited as evidence to support prescription practices of opioids and has been implicated in the cause of the US opioids epidemic.
