Inpatient
Services
We include inpatient evaluation during hospitalizations
for low trauma fractures and consultations of complex
metabolic bone disorders.
Outpatient
Services
We offer office consultations with the osteoporosis
specialists and the osteoporosis nurse clinician.
An
intravenous infusion area is available for patients
who require intravenous osteoporosis medications and
clinical counseling with the osteoporosis nurse clinician.

Bone
Densitometry and Spine Vertebral Assessment (DXA and
SVA)
A state-of-the-art
Hologic Discovery Densitometer allows us to evaluate
your bone health. This technology allows the assessment
of bone density in the spine, hip and wrist. The densitometer
gives an instant assessment of vertebral morphometric
changes which allows us to visualize vertebral fractures
(spine fractures). A Hologic Delphi W allows us to
provide our patients with on-site, easily accessible,
state-of-the-art imaging. This service is provided
on both a scheduled and walk-in basis.
The whole
body densitometry and body composition services are
useful to visualize the percent of muscle mass and
fat present in patients. We can then use this information
for research settings or to tailor a weight management
plan.
Peripheral
bone densitometry is provided to patients with low
trauma fractures. This procedure is a heel ultrasound
and is performed by the osteoporosis nurse clinician.

Bone Histomorphometry
This service is coordinated with Dr. Stuart Sprague
at the Northwestern Evanston campus. The service allows
us to visualize the specific bone components and determine
if there are any bone specific abnormalities present.
This service is of particular importance in patients
with complex medical presentations.
Bone MicroCT imaging
This available service is a research modality that
allows us to visualize the three dimensional structure
of bone. Although the service is largely restricted
to research, its potential lies in its ability to
better document the bone remodeling associated with
anabolic agents.
Emergency Department
All low trauma fractures
seen at NMH's Emergency Department are recommended
to undergo evaluation for osteoporosis and metabolic
bone diseases. Patients with fractures are at an increased
risk of hip fractures. Our goal is to evaluate and
treat them in an effort to reduce the likelihood of
future fractures.
