Hanauer to Join Gastroenterology and Hepatology

A distinguished physician-scientist and international leader in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, Stephen B. Hanauer, MD, will join the medical school on January 1, 2014, as the Clifford Joseph Barborka Professor of Medicine and the medical director of the new Digestive Disease Center.

Led by Joseph Leventhal, MD, PhD,an innovative research program investigating if stem cells may be the key to allowing organ transplant patients to stop taking immunosuppressive drugs has received a grant that will allow researchers to finish Phase II of the clinical trials and begin Phase III.  Read more >

Cleveland Discusses Mitosis in Mammalian Cells

Don W. Cleveland, PhD, chair of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research at the University of California, San Diego, presents "Guarding the Genome: Centromeres, Aneuploidy, and Tumorigenesis" as part of the Lectures in Life Sciences series at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, November 19, in the Hughes Auditorium at the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center. Cleveland's research focuses on spindle assembly and the movement of chromosomes into daughter cells before division, as well as the genetics of axonal growth and human motor neurons diseases, especially Lou Gehrig's disease. He received a BS in physics from New Mexico State University and a PhD in biochemical sciences from Princeton University.
