Ancient Patients: Physician Assesses CT Scans of Mummies

It's not every day that Jeffrey L. Rosengarten, MD, works with 2,000-year-old patients. Rosengarten, the medical director of Diagnostic Imaging at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, was recently invited to the Field Museum to work on CT scans of Egyptian and Peruvian mummies. "I was thrilled and honored to be invited to participate and I was happy to volunteer my time and expertise to their goals," Rosengarten said. The objective was to determine the age of some of the mummies and assess whether post-traumatic deformities on the bodies were acquired before or after death. Completing the assessment has some obstacles, such as the absence of organs. "All of the other soft tissues are completely desiccated, which means that you are entirely dependent on the skeleton for landmarks," he said. Anthropologists at the museum have invited Rosengarten to return for additional assessments of the CT scans.
