On June 24, Meg and Dan Kresach, founders of BrainUp, presented Derek Wainwright, PhD, assistant professor of Neurological Surgery, Medicine (Hematology and Oncology), and Microbiology-Immunology, and Rimas Lukas, MD, associate professor of Neurology (Neuro-oncology), with a $170,000 grant to support novel research on immunotherapy for glioblastoma patients at Northwestern. Wainwright and Lukas are both members of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.

“We really appreciate this grant,” said Dr. Lukas. “These types of grants can help lead to National Institutes of Health funding. BrainUp’s support is truly invaluable.”

“We are pleased to be a part of the Northwestern family,” said Dan Kresach. “You are our voice,” added Meg Kresach.

Meg and Dan Kresach founded BrainUp after they lost their only child Olivia (age 22) to glioblastoma five years ago. BrainUp facilitates community involvement and engagement through fundraising events. This group is partnering with physicians and research professionals to one day find a cure for glioblastoma, which is an aggressive type of cancer that can occur in the brain or spinal cord and is often difficult to treat.

BrainUp works solely with researchers and hospitals in Chicago, and raises funds through private donations at its annual 5K Run/Walk. BrainUp also awards nurses and physicians yearly who exemplify compassionate care and excellence. This year at their 4th Annual 5K Run/Walk on October 6, they will honor Laura Zuckerman, APN, AOCNP, and Karyn Schmidt, APN, nurses at the Lou and Jean Malnati Brain Tumor Institute of the Lurie Cancer Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, for the compassionate care they have shown toward patients. Prior to joining Northwestern, Zuckerman worked at Rush University Medical Center, where she was part of Olivia Kresach’s care team.
