Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
Departments interact with the Faculty Affairs Office to obtain the dean's signature on a Memorandum of Understanding for a faculty appointment.
When faculty hold appointments across multiple institutions, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) may be used to outline the terms of the relationship. For faculty who receive salary from a Veteran's Affairs (VA) medical center and apply for National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, the NIH requires an MOU to confirm that their total FTE encompasses effort across NU, NMG (if applicable), and the VA medical center, with the salary received across those entities forming the institutional base salary used for effort reporting. The total effort across those entities cannot exceed 1.0 FTE.
- For more information and to obtain the most recent MOU template, please visit Veteran's Affairs (VA) Medical Center Memorandum of Understanding on the Office for Research website.
- After the MOU is prepared and has been signed by the faculty member and department chair, please upload the MOU to the form to Request Feinberg Dean's Approval for Memorandum of Understanding.
- FAO will review and obtain the signature of the Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and then return the signed MOU to you for further routing.
