I am an Assistant Professor of Urology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Ulm in Ulm, Germany with both an M.D and Ph.D. I went on to complete his residency training at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. I am an Assistant Professor of Urology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Ulm in Ulm, Germany with both an M.D and Ph.D. I went on to complete his residency training at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. I subsequently completed a fellowship at UT Southwestern in Dallas, TX specializing in reconstruction, trauma, and prosthetics.

My clinical interests include the treatment of stress urinary incontinence, which often occurs following surgery for prostate cancer. I am also an expert in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). There are a wide range of short-term and long-term treatment options that I believe can help improve the patient’s quality of life.

I spent time during a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard focusing on biomarkers of prostate cancer progression and metastasis. This included experience in clinical research, both patient-based and tissue-based, all of which I continue to implement in my research endeavors. My research efforts also include benign prostatic hyperplasia, reconstruction, and urethral wound healing.[Shorten text]

Academic Focus

Analyzing urethral wound healing and promoting and inhibiting factors for it has been the focus of my research for several years. We have established a rat model of urethroplasty surgery that allowed the analysis of urethral healing. We have established a rat model of urethroplasty surgery that allowed the analysis of urethral healing. Briefly, urethral healing recapitulates dermal healing with its phases yet with a prolongation of the phases, specifically the inflammatory phase. An increased peri-urethral inflammatory response such as can be elicited by androgen supplementation in an androgen deprived (castrate levels) system will delay the healing process by not only prolonging the inflammatory phase but also by extending the regenerative phase that is furthermore characterized by increased proliferation of myofibroblasts and scar formation. This in turn can foster the development of urethral strictures. Given the implications that strictures can have on the patient and also on the healthcare system I believe that strategies decreasing stricture development after urethral surgery or the rate of stricture recurrence is of paramount importance in reconstructive urology.[Shorten text]
