Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

Department of Urology

Overview

Our department offers three clerkships to medical students:

Third Year

Fourth Year and Visiting Student (Fourth Year)

Pediatric Urology Clerkship

Our department believes that the clerkship experience is invaluable to the student when choosing a specialty. We suggest this plan for students who desire a career in urology:

Clerkships: The objective of the clerkships is to provide students with sufficient exposure to urology, pediatric urology, general surgery and gynecology to assure the validity of career interest.

Research: Serious consideration should be given to an individual study effort for one quarter.

Didactic: Participation in formal didactic exercises can assist the student by providing a framework for his/her clinical or investigative endeavors. Examples of courses the student might consider are:

  • Biochemical differentiation of disease
  • Clinical pathology correlation in human disease
  • Molecular basis of disease and diagnosis
  • Pathophysiology of renal disease

Third Year

The goal of the third year clerkship is to introduce medical students to the basic concepts of urology, enable them to evaluate patients with urologic diseases, and to interpret laboratory and radiological tests used to evaluate urologic conditions. For additional information on the M3 clerkship, consult the Department of Surgery's M3 Surgery Clerkship site. Alternatively, you may contact the Department of Urology's Education Coordinator, Kelly Ross.

Fourth Year

Medical school seniors have two urology elective clerkship opportunities at Feinberg: Adult urology and Pediatric urology. Each of these electives are four weeks long. Students will be graded on the Feinberg School of Medicine grading scale of Honors, High Pass, Pass and Fail.

Students interested in family practice, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics, gynecology, surgery, urology and those who are still undecided will benefit from the urology clerkship. Completion of a junior surgery clerkship is prerequisite.

Students will be integral to the adult and pediatric urology services under the mentorship of the urology faculty and housestaff. Three weeks of the adult urology clerkship will be spent on each of the three adult urology services at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and one week on the pediatric urology service at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Alternatively, students may choose to participate in a four week pediatric urology elective.

Visiting Students

Visiting clerkships make it possible for fourth-year medical students to learn more about residency programs at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University, visit the Chicago campus, interact with current residents and program directors, and work alongside Northwestern faculty and students during a clinical rotation. Many outstanding current residents participated in the visiting clerkship program as a student. All Visiting Student rotations are scheduled through the Visiting Student Coordinator in the Office of Medical Education. Visiting medical students are invited to apply for our 4th year urology electives through VSAS. Learn more about the visiting student application process by visiting the Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine Visiting Student webpage.*

Grades will be sent directly to the student’s home institution from the Feinberg School of Medicine.

Students will be given the opportunity to take advantage of the teaching sessions of the Department of Urology.

*Northwestern is committed to a diverse training environment. To defray expenses for Visiting Clerkship students who are from groups traditionally underrepresented in medicine, the GME Diversity Council offers stipends up to $1,500 for rotations during the summer through early winter or as funds allow. These grants help make it possible for students to experience Northwestern programs first-hand. For more information on visiting rotations and the Diversity Stipend, contact visitingstudents@northwestern.edu.

Pediatric Urology Clerkship

The student electing a clerkship in pediatric urology takes part in all the activities of the service based at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago (Lurie Children’s). The student learns the principles of endoscopic and open surgery and is expected to evaluate patients in the clinic both upon and after admission and to participate in the patients' care in the operating room. Under the direction of the faculty, the student may participate in kidney preservation activities and in transplantation. The student attends the daily teaching ward rounds and the weekly surgical and medical/surgical conferences at Lurie Children’s and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Personal contact with members of the staff is emphasized. This clerkship is intended for students with interest in family practice, pediatrics, surgery or urology. Completion of a junior surgery clerkship is prerequisite.
