Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship Overview

At Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, we are committed to continuing the tradition of treating the most critically ill children while providing the best training possible. Our new state-of-the-art, 23-story facility located on Northwestern’s downtown Chicago campus allows for convenient collaboration with our other ophthalmology colleagues.

Program Overview

Fellows receive broad clinical, surgical and research experience in all areas of pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. This includes pediatric and adult strabismus, amblyopia, pediatric cataracts, glaucoma, cornea, plastics and lacrimal surgery, pediatric ocular tumors, retinopathy of prematurity, neurofibromatosis, and exposure to ophthalmic genetics and electrophysiologic testing.

Fellows participate in all aspects of the ophthalmologic examination, evaluation and treatment of patients. Surgical training includes pediatric cataract extraction, primary and secondary intraocular lens implantation, strabismus surgery (horizontal muscle recession and resection, inferior oblique recession, inferior oblique advancement, superior oblique tenotomy or spacer, complex strabismus reoperation, and adult procedures), pediatric oculoplastic eyelid procedures, nasolacrimal duct probing, balloon dacryoplasty, nasolacrimal duct silicone intubation, dacryo- cystorhinostomy, intralesional steroid injections, glaucoma procedures, and treatment of retinoblastoma and retinopathy of prematurity.

Positions Offered

One pediatric ophthalmology fellowship position is available annually at Northwestern. This program is AUPO FCC compliant and is overseen by the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. All applications are processed through the San Francisco Match Program.
