Department of Neurological Surgery

Residency Program Director's Message

Dear Prospective Applicant,
The faculty in the Department of Neurological Surgery at Northwestern University is excited about your interest in our program. We are a group of physicians, scientists, nurses, and residents who are collectively working together to excel in the care of neurosurgical patients.
The field of neurological surgery is undoubtedly one of the most challenging and thrilling of medical specialties. As surgeons, we employ the latest techniques to deliver the safest and optimal neurosurgical care. Yet as physicians, we take care of our patients beyond their immediate surgical needs. In the words of a famous American poet and physician William Carlos Williams “the secret of patient care is caring for the patient”. The neurosurgeons at Northwestern Memorial Hospital combine world-class surgical care with a humane approach to patients affected with diverse neurological disorders.
Our faculty consists of leading and internationally recognized surgeons spanning the entire spectrum of neurosurgical care. We offer our trainees an unprecedented exposure to neuro-oncology, cerebrovascular surgery, spinal neurosurgery, pediatric neurosurgery, as well as training in functional and epilepsy surgery. Our group performs over 2000 cases each year and consists of several affiliated hospitals in the Chicago area. We are confident that you will be fully trained in the latest approaches, technology, and science, which exist in neurological surgery.
The clinical enterprise is supported by a rich and robust research infrastructure. The Department ranks in the top three in the nation in terms of NIH funding and consists of both neurosurgeons and scientists doing basic science and clinical research. This endeavor is supported by a robust clinical trial enterprise, and our faculty routinely develops and participates in clinical trials within the spectrum of neurological disorders. We are confident that our research portfolio provides a fertile ground for our residents to grow and contribute to patient care.
The goal of the program is to train future generations of exemplary neurosurgeon-scientists who will lead within their respective fields. We recognize that the residency is long and at times arduous, yet at the same time the rewards are bountiful. A graded system of progressive responsibility allows for increasing independence, which culminates in the chief year. A dedicated 1-2 year period of time for either basic science or clinical research prepares individuals to become future leaders in either academic practice or the private sector. You will find the environment rich and rewarding. The city of Chicago offers many opportunities in which to enjoy your free time. We look forward to getting to know you.
