The courses in the Health Services and Outcomes Research (HSOR) program are offered in a hybrid, online + in-person format that accommodates students from diverse geographies and those with clinical or other full-time obligations.
Most course material is accessible online, but once per quarter, students convene for in-person coursework. During these on-campus periods, students participate in class sessions, engage with instructors and classmates, and attend professional development activities.
This hybrid format offers much of the flexibility of online programs as well as the opportunity to engage with faculty and peers in a scholarly setting. Approximately 20 percent of current master’s students reside outside of Illinois.

Hybrid instruction techniques utilize technology and digital platforms to expand and enhance classroom instruction. HSOR faculty employ videoconferencing, lecture capture software, and online applications to deliver rich content and connect with students.
“I really enjoy the hybrid format courses. I was pleasantly surprised at how conducive it was to learning the material. The instructors are passionate about their topics and teaching, and responsive to any questions I would have. Some faculty use recorded online lectures, which are pretty much equivalent to attending a normal lecture, with the added bonus of being able to replay them as many times as needed.” - First-year student
