The residency program in internal medicine at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University utilizes two downtown Chicago hospitals: Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Jesse Brown VA Medical Center where residents planning to pursue careers in general internal medicine and its subspecialties develop excellent clinical skills. Residents in the Northwestern Memorial/VA medical center program are exposed to a wide range of clinical experiences in both inpatient and outpatient settings. During all rotations, residents work closely with members of our diverse faculty and develop close working relationships with both general internists and subspecialists. Both institutions offer a wide range of ambulatory experiences. Graduates of the program benefit from the excellent mix of general internal medicine and subspecialty referrals seen at Northwestern Memorial and VA medical center. The comprehensive didactic portion of the program is highlighted by weekly medical grand rounds featuring invited lecturers from institutions throughout the United States. This lecture series addresses advances in research and clinical medicine with an emphasis on evidenced-based patient care. Residents have opportunities for research blocks during the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years. The categorical internal medicine program, NRMP 2247140C0, offers 38 positions at Northwestern Memorial/VA medical center. First-year residents rotate on the general medicine, hematology-oncology, and hepatology inpatient units, the oncology inpatient unit at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, coronary care unit, medical intensive care unit, a women's health rotation, and two medical subspecialty consult services. A night float system is utilized. First-year residents also spend a half-day per week in the general internal medicine continuity clinic. During the second and third years, residents devote six months to primary patient responsibility, including general internal medicine, hepatology, and hematology-oncology on their firm's inpatient units as well as in critical care rotations, emergency medicine and outpatient medicine, and oncology. The remaining months are devoted to elective experiences in internal medicine subspecialties, ambulatory medicine, or research. Because a major focus of the residency is developing outpatient skills, residents in the second and third years spend two half-days per week in ambulatory care clinics. The general internal medicine continuity practice started in the first year continues during the residency. In addition, the ambulatory care experience expands to another half-day, which may include another dedicated weekly continuity clinic or community health clinic. Residents also participate in subspecialty outpatient practices during subspecialty elective rotations. Residents planning careers in primary care internal medicine or academic general internal medicine are encouraged to take several rotations in ambulatory medicine. These two-month blocks consist of various experiences in ambulatory medicine, such as internal medicine subspecialty clinics, dermatology, gynecology, neurology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, and sports medicine. Residents at Northwestern Memorial/VA medical center are encouraged to participate in the research activities of the department, either as part of subspecialty rotations or separate research electives. If they have significant research experience and plan careers in academic medicine, they may elect a special track that integrates two years of clinical internal medicine with three years of research. Candidates interested in this program should indicate their interest to the program director. The preliminary internal medicine program, NRMP 2247140P0, is a one-year internal medicine program at Northwestern Memorial/VA medical center available to two residents seeking careers in other disciplines that require an initial clinical year. The program for preliminary-year residents is similar to the first year of the categorical program. Preliminary-year residents have a rotation in emergency medicine at Northwestern Memorial in lieu of one month of ward medicine. They may take one or two rotations in critical care. The general internal medicine continuity practice is optional for preliminary-year residents. Elective time is also available during the preliminary year. The Northwestern Memorial/VA medical center programs accept applications via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) only. After reviewing the applications and supporting documents, the residency program offers interviews to selected applicants. An interview is essential for admission but is not assured for all applicants. Interviews are conducted from November until mid-January. During the interview day, candidates receive an overview of the program from the program director, attend morning report, meet with the department chair, have interviews with several members of the faculty, attend lunch with a group of current housestaff members, and tour the campus.
