Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center of Northwestern University

A Place of Vision

Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center

Improving the lives of people with cancer, diabetes, heart disease, neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, and other disabling conditions demands intense scientific inquiry. Rapidly translating laboratory findings to clinical care requires an environment that promotes novel thinking, collaboration, and innovation. A place of discovery, the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center of Northwestern University, located at 303 East Superior Street on the University’s Chicago campus, provides a modern setting for the collaborative study of today’s most challenging medical research questions.

A monumental achievement for the Feinberg School of Medicine, the new building greatly enhances the translational medical research conducted by interdisciplinary groups of investigators across the medical school. Clinicians and basic scientists work side-by-side in innovative “open” laboratories that foster multidisciplinary teams focused on disease-specific programs in areas such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, bionanotechnology, infectious diseases, regenerative medicine, and genetics. Designed by New York-based architecture firm Davis Brody Bond, the building’s airy and spacious floor plan encourages the exchange of ideas—formal and informal—throughout the facility from the open labs to stairwells and hallways to the lobby and dining areas.

The first new medical research building in more than a decade on the Chicago campus provides the physical space necessary to support the Feinberg School’s goal of reaching the top tier of the nation’s research-intensive medical schools. This 426,753-gross-square-foot building features nine floors of laboratories that provide 216,810 gross square feet of new research space. These floors include 12 laboratories per floor, each with room for a principal investigator and five additional investigators. Other floors house education space as well as support functions. The completion of this facility, along with new research space in the McGaw Pavilion of the Health Sciences Building, increases the Feinberg School’s research space by 75 percent.

The research center will be home to approximately 1,000 researchers, technicians, postdoctoral students, and lab assistants—adding to the Feinberg School community’s more than 7,100 students and faculty and staff members. Investigators on each floor will bring some $6 million per year in extramural research funding.

Designed to enhance progress in science and ultimately patient care, the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center is a place of endless possibilities.
