A Place of Collaboration

The $200 million Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center stands today thanks to the outstanding support and generosity of individuals and organizations. The investment of these benefactors in Northwestern’s research vision has provided the physical infrastructure to ramp up growth in areas of strength and promise.

Named after the late husband of philanthropist Ann Lurie, the building honors the memory of Robert Lurie, who died at age 48 in 1990. Mr. Lurie was one of Chicago’s preeminent investment entrepreneurs and part-owner and member of the board of directors of the Chicago Bulls and White Sox. A bronze likeness of Mr. Lurie, sculpted by internationally renowned artist Bruno Lucchesi, overlooks the Superior Street entrance of the research facility.

Ann Lurie’s $40 million leadership gift has led the way as Northwestern has received some $160 million in gifts and grants to date. Other lead partners include Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the Patrick and Shirley Ryan Family, the State of Illinois, and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Throughout the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center, named auditoriums, classrooms, floors, and laboratories recognize donors who have made a commitment to the Feinberg School. These named areas include the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Research Laboratories, Fred Drucker and A. Norman Drucker Virology Research Laboratories, Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Research Program, and Alan A. Groth Laboratory on the Center for Genetic Medicine floor.

In partnership with Abbie Lurie, school officials are planning a rooftop garden above the loading dock. This will help reduce smog and cool the roof while providing appealing green space for all to enjoy. The garden will be visible from floors three and above in the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center.
