Doctorate Graduate Research Programs

Walter S. and Lucienne Driskill Graduate Training Program in the Life Sciences

The Walter S. and Lucienne Driskill Graduate Training Program in the Life Sciences, formerly known as the Integrated Graduate Program in the Life Sciences (IGP), was established in 1990 to serve as an umbrella program for graduate student training in all basic science and clinical departments at the medical school. The program is designed to give its students flexibility in choosing courses, research interests, and thesis advisors at the medical school while offering them a strong foundation in the modern sciences. Students can earn a PhD degree in one of their nine curricula.

Northwestern University Institute for Neuroscience

Four schools and 20 departments participate in this program that offers students a PhD in Neuroscience. Those enrolled work with faculty from the Graduate School, Feinberg School of Medicine, School of Speech and the School of Engineering. One of NUIN’s goals is to provide the students with hands-on laboratory research.

MD/PhD Program (Medical Scientist Training Program)

The MSTP program allows students to work towards both an MD and PhD degree through the medical school and the Graduate School, respectively. Students are first admitted to the medical school before applying for the MSTP.

 PhD in Clinical Psychology

The division of Psychology within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences offers this degree. Each year five to seven new students are admitted.

Physical Therapy

The Physical Therapy program is a 27-month program offered through the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement. Upon fulfilling degree requirements, students sit for the license examination.

Master's Graduate Research Programs

MD/MM Program

This program, offered by the Feinberg School of Medicine and the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management, allows students to earn a doctor of medicine and a master of management degree in five years. Students apply to Kellogg in their third year of medical school, spend one year at Kellogg before completing both colleges degree requirements in their fifth year.

MPH Program

The MPH program is a part-time evening program designed to prepare health care professionals to be boundary spanners between clinical care and public health. Students typically complete four hours of classroom instruction per week, year round, for three years. This program is administered through the Feinberg Department of Preventive Medicine.

MD/MPH Program

The MD/MPH Program allows students in the medical school to earn a Masters in Public Health degree part-time in the evening while they earn a MD at Feinberg. Administered through the Department of Preventive Medicine, students should first be accepted into the medical school before applying to the Graduate School.

MS in Epidemiology and Biostatistics

The MSEB is an intensive four quarter (July 1st - June 30th) degree program in epidemiology and biostatistics.  The program provides an education in the design, conduct and data analysis of population-based research with a focus on quantitative methods.  It is sponsored by the Department of Preventive Medicine.

MS Clinical Investigation Program

The Master’s of Science in Clinical Investigation is a part-time evening program that complements the Master’s of Public Health program in providing education in quantitative and ethically sound methods necessary for design, implementation, analysis, and publication of clinical research studies.

Genetic Counseling

This 18-month program is aimed at preparing students to provide one-on–one or group genetic counseling. Students apply through the Graduate School and the program is conducted primarily on the Chicago campus.

Cerfiticate Research Programs

Prosthetics-Orthotics Certificate Program

This is a separate certificate program which prepares its students for a career as practitioners in orthotics or prosthetics. It is a six-month program that prepares individuals for the American Board for Certification practitioner-level exam.
