Runyan received her degree from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois in 1990. There, she worked for Dr. Arnold Hampel on a research project involving the design and creation of hairpin ribozymes engineered to the human papiloma virus. Following this, she worked for five years with Dr. Andreas Constantinou in the Department of Surgical Oncology at the University of Illinois in Chicago, studying various naturally occurring plant compounds as potential cancer preventative agents. In 1996, she joined the Schnaper laboratory. Runyan has been involved in multiple projects including differential display analysis of mesangial cell culture models of fibrogenesis, and estrogen signaling in endothelial cells in relation to angiogenesis. Currently, she works with Dr. Schnaper and Dr. Anne-Christine Poncelet studying the signal transduction mechanisms of TGF-beta induced extracellular matrix accumulation in human mesangial cells.
