A Message from the Director

The Residency Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine has a large, diverse patient base that provides extensive educational opportunities for our residents. Our faculty includes full-time academic physicians and scientists, as well as a multitude of dedicated teachers. For more information about our outstanding faculty, please visit the faculty pages on our Web site. Our commitment to graduate medical education encourages residents to fully participate as members of the health care team.

Weekly conferences include departmental grand rounds and a clinical service review, and several specialty conferences in genetics, endoscopy, perinatology, gynecologic oncology, surgical gynecology, and reproductive endocrinology. In the summer, departmental grand rounds is replaced by sessions focusing on ethics, humanities, and professionalism, which help residents acquire skills in applying these principles to clinical decision-making. A weekly didactic session provides a comprehensive two-year curriculum in which residents are protected from their clinical duties. Residents have full access to the William R. Roach and Cromer, Residents' Education Center. A journal club, which has meetings every six weeks, is designed to enhance the critical evaluation of the literature and reinforce evidence-based medicine. Residents may also attend the monthly meetings of the Chicago Gynecologic Society. Upon entering the second year of residency, residents attend one regional or national meeting annually, which is partially subsidized. In addition, residents are given the option to attend at least one of several postgraduate courses offered by the department each year. For the past several years we have been able to provide a general obstetric and gynecologic textbook, POA, and most recently a PRoles study guide.

In anticipation of your interview at Northwestern, I have provided a number of materials that you might find helpful.  I have also invited a resident to contact you to answer any questions.  This year heralds an important milestone for the Northwestern residency program.  During the current academic year (2009-10), we have been sending residents to Stroger Hospital of Cook County to augment their experience in colposcopy and family planning (PGY-2), gyn (PGY-3 and -4) and high risk obstetrics (PGY-3) .  The experiences have been synergistic providing more cases and a wide range of acuity to our trainees.  As a result of this initial success, we have developed the following educational plan:  Stroger Hospital of Cook County has agreed to close their residency program in obstetrics and gynecology.  This year, Northwestern will recruit and expand to 12 positions / year to be phased in over the coming 4 years.   After full integration is obtained, Northwestern residents will spend approximately 30% of their experience at Stroger as an integrated training site.

We are highly optimistic that the expanded Northwestern residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology will provide the very best training for our residents in addition to excellent patient care and research opportunities.  We look forward sharing our plans with you personally.

We hope you find this information about our residency program helpful. Please continue to explore this site to learn more about the residency program and  opportunities that are available in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
