Maternal-Fetal Medicine Patient Services

The types of pregnancies cared for by maternal-fetal medicine specialists include

a)   Maternal conditions which pose a risk during pregnancy, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, asthma, sickle cell disease, systemic lupus, and HIV

b)   Fetal conditions of concern, including poor fetal growth (IUGR), congenital birth defects and infections

c)   Obstetric conditions such as multiple gestation (twins or greater), incompetent cervix, preterm labor, Rh sensitization, and recurrent pregnancy loss

d)    Any condition that increases the chances of preterm delivery

Certain diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are often performed by maternal-fetal medicine specialists. These include comprehensive detailed fetal ultrasound examinations, cervical cerclage, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), umbilical blood sampling, and intrauterine fetal transfusion.
