Neurosurgical Research Programs

Integrative Research in the Prevention and Treatment of
Diseases and Injury of the Brain and Spine

Broad Areas of Research Thrust

  1. Outcomes science, epidemiology and clinical trials
The study of outcomes of neurosurgical intervention, including relevant parameters for assessing the impact of neurosurgical diseases on quality of life, the safety and effectiveness of novel therapies, and optimal models of their delivery and integration in health care.
  2. Technology development and assessment
The development of novel technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of neurosurgical diseases. These include molecular imaging and therapeutic vector delivery to the brain and spine, modulation of neurologic function, and technical enhancements of neurosurgical treatments through computer applications, robotics, nanotechnology and minimally invasive strategies.  The scientific assessment of the safety and effectiveness of novel technologies
  3. Basic mechanisms of neurosurgical diseases
The study of systems biology, cellular, genetic and molecular mechanisms associated with neurosurgical diseases. The applications of mechanistic concepts for explaining, predicting and modifying disease behavior.
