Follow the basic security steps that are outlined at http://www.it.northwestern.edu/getcontrol/ Install Symantec AntiVirus software (this software is available at no charge to registered Northwestern University students who have an active netid). Check to make sure your computer has the latest updates to the operating system. Set your computer to automatically obtain these operating system updates in the future. Secure the passwords on your computer (users and administrator password) Eliminate spyware on your computer. You may need more than one program to do this. Spybot, Ad-aware, and Microsoft all have free program that you can use to eliminate this type of threat. Enable the built-in personal firewall if you are using Windows XP or Macintosh OS X.
