Research Credit

To receive credit for your involvement in the Area of Scholarly Concentration (AOSC), fill out the Request for Elective Research Credit form and submit it to your research mentor for approval. The signed form should then be submitted to Stephanie A. Miller in person or via fax or email at least two weeks prior to starting.

The form will then be reviewed by the AOSC director for approval. Once your credit request is approved, the registrar will be informed and research elective will be added to your schedule in OASIS in the block you requested.

At the conclusion of the research credit block, please complete the Research Credit Evaluation form and have it signed by your mentor. Once it's been signed, it must be submitted to Stephanie A. Miller. no later than two weeks after the completion of your research block. She will have the form reviewed by the director, who will determine if research credit should be granted. The decision will be shared with the registrar, who will post credit to your transcript and notify you when the process is complete.

Three Months of Credit for Research

You may receive academic credit for a research elective performed either at Northwestern or at another institution, provided that certain criteria are met. The purpose of the criteria is to assure that the experience will be a valid educational endeavor, and one worthy of the tuition which you pay for that quarter. A complete description of the criteria is given on the form which must be submitted in advance for credit approval (Application for 3 Months of Research Credit Towards the MD). Research must be a full-time effort for a minimum of one quarter (3 consecutive months). This research must be performed after completion of the pre-clinical curriculum.  The research plan must be approved prior to the start of the research project by a sub-committee of the Medical Student Research Committee.

If lack of sufficient time or another interfering factor precludes meeting these criteria, you may still do the research as an "extra" experience, without degree credit. Nevertheless, you must be registered for this experience in order to assure that the University’s liability and malpractice insurance programs cover your activities.

The Application for 3 Months of Research Credit Towards the MD needs to be completed by you and submitted to your Principal Investigator for approval.  The signed form should then be submitted to Stephanie Miller. This can be dropped off, faxed, or emailed to Stephanie.  The form will be reviewed by a sub-committee of the Medical Student Research Committee.  If there is more information or detail needed about your project, Stephanie will contact you.  Otherwise, the Registrar will contact you when your research credit request has been processed and approved.   At that time “RESEARCH ELECTIVE” will be added to your schedule in OASIS in the block/s requested.

The 3 Month Research Credit Evaluation form needs to be completed and signed by your Principal Investigator at the conclusion of the research credit block.  Once your Principal Investigator has evaluated and signed the 3 Month Research Credit Evaluation form, it must be submitted to Stephanie Miller.  Stephanie will have the form reviewed by a sub-committee of the Medical Student Research Committee.  When approved, the Registrar will notify you and post credit to your transcript.

The 3 Month Research Credit Evaluation form must be submitted to Stephanie Miller at least two weeks prior to the start of the experience.  The 3 Month Research Credit Evaluation form must be submitted to Stephanie no later than 2 weeks after the completion of your research block.
