Title: GALA II: Genes-environment, Admixture and Latino Asthmatics Study

Principal Investigator: Pedro Avila, MD

What is the reason for doing this study?
The purpose of the study is to determine the genetic and environmental risk factors of asthma, asthma-related traits, ancestry, and drug metabolism to improve the treatment of asthma among Latino populations residing in different geographic locations.

You are asked to take part in this study because you are an asthmatic of Latino or Hispanic origin and we would like information about people in this group; or you are a healthy Latino or Hispanic and we will use you as a control subject.  In this case the healthy control subject is a person in good general health and does not have a history of asthma or allergies.

What you will do if you choose to be in this study?
As a subject in this study, you will be asked to come to the Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Clinical Research Unit located in Galter Pavilion, Room 18-289.  For most asthmatic subjects and for all healthy controls this will be a single study visit. For asthma subjects, your visit will be approximately 60-90 minutes and about 50 minutes for healthy controls. A second visit will be required for those asthmatic subjects who do not improve their lung function by 12% after the inhalation of albuterol. The second visit will be about 30-45 minutes for a methacholine test to validate that you in fact have asthma.
