Installation Instructions

*Prior to making any changes you are highly encouraged to back up all data. Northwestern University is not responsible for loss of data.

Note:  All users currently using Windows Update (Windows) or Software Update (Mac) to keep their operating system up to date should continue to use it along with Feinberg’s BigFix service. BigFix will install approved and tested patches without you having to take any action, other than possibly restarting your system if prompted to do so.  

Please consult this infographic to determine whether you should install BigFix. Do not install BigFix if your machine is managed by Feinberg IT or by Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago or the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. 

Windows Installation:

  1. Download the installer for Windows from the link below:

  2. Run the file labeled FSMBigFix.exe
  3. Click next when prompted and then finish when complete

Mac Installation:

  1. Download the zip file labeled BESAgent.zip from the link below:
    Download for Mac
  2. Extract the zip file to your computer
  3. Run the file labeled BESAgent.pkg
  4. Click next when prompted and then finish when complete

Note: In order to install the BigFix client software, you must be logged into your device with an account that has administrative privileges. BigFix will inform you if additional steps are required to secure your device. If you need assistance, please call 312-908-6349 or email fsmhelp@northwestern.edu.


System Requirements

Windows System Requirements

  • Microsoft Windows 7 Professional or higher
  • Minimum 4 gb of RAM
  • 300 mb of free hard drive space

Mac System Requirements

  • OS X 10.8 or higher
  • Minimum 4 gb of RAM
  • 200 mb of free hard drive space

Verify the BigFix client installation (optional)

After installation of the BigFix client on your device, it will appear that nothing has changed, but BigFix will be running as a service.

If you want to verify the installation:

  1. On Windows:
    • A. Open the Windows Task Manager by pressing CTRL + ALT + DELETE and clicking the Task Manager button.
    • B. Click the Processes tab and look for IBM BigFix Agent and BESClient.exe in the list of processes.

      Note: If you are using Windows 7, click Show processes from all users.

  2. On Mac:
    • A. While logged in to your machine, open Spotlight Search. Spotlight Search can be opened by clicking the Magnifying Glass icon in the upper right-hand corner of your screen, or by using the shortcut command “command + space bar”

    • B. Within Spotlight Search, type in ‘Activity Monitor.” Open the application Activity Monitor.

    • Within Activity Monitor, click ‘View’ in the upper left-hand toolbar, and select the option All Processes

    • Under the Memory tab in Activity Monitor, look for a process named BESAgent. The presence of this process means BigFix is on your Mac.
