Overview of Programs

The Institute for Healthcare Studies at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine is a leader in research and education. We currently offer the following educational programs:

Graduate Programs in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety (HQPS)
The relatively new disciplines of healthcare quality and patient safety have emerged as central to the development of good healthcare, and require acquisition of substantive knowledge and skills. The goal of these programs is to educate the next generation of quality improvement innovators and patient safety leaders. Northwestern University offers three graduate level programs in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety: Master of Science degree, Faculty Development Program and Certifcate Program. These programs are all part-time and do not require students to live in the Chicago area.

Master of Science in Health Services and Outcomes Research (HSR)
The two-year, part-time, Master of Science degree program will offer a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary training of both medical doctors and pre and post doctoral diplomates to fulfill the need in the important field of health services and outcomes research.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program in Health Services Research
The purpose of the Northwestern University Health Services Research Post-Doctoral Fellowship is to help ensure that adequate numbers of highly trained individuals are available to carry out the Nation's health services research agenda in order to improve quality and safety of health care, enhance access and healthcare equity, and appraise the effectiveness of healthcare expenditures. The program is designed for professionals with a Medical Degree (MD) or Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) who wish to gain expertise in health services research while pursuing research funding through grants and publishing their research findings. A large part of this experience is achieved through mentor relationships between fellows and distinguished faculty mentors. The fellowship currently requires completion of six core courses and two elective courses. Fellows may choose to expand the scope of formal coursework in order to complete the following Master's Degrees:
