Health services related course are offered through schools and department throughout Northwestern University.

A.   The following courses are required for all fellows:

  • Introduction to Biostatistics
  • Introduction to Epidemiology
  • Intermediate Biostatistics 
  • Intermediate Epidemiology 
  • Data Analysis Techniques for Health Services Research
  • Health Economics and Healthcare Financing or Introduction to the Principles and Management of Health Industry Systems
  • Ethical Issues in Health Services Research or Ethical Issues in Clinical Research or Colloquium on Integrity in Biomedical Research
  • Writing and Peer Reviewing for Publication

Based on career objectives and prior training, a fellow may waive up to three courses or substitute up to three courses with permission from their mentors and Fellowship Program Director. 



C.  Other requirements include:

  • Attend the weekly seminar offered at the Institute for Healthcare Studies which focus on current health services research at Northwestern, in Chicago, and nationally;
  • Attend the weekly “Work in Progress” seminar sponsored by the Division of General Internal Medicine and the Institute for Healthcare Studies;
  • Attend the weekly “fellows” seminar which offers an opportunity for collaborative evaluation of fellow’s research plans and findings, discussion of current health services topics and literature, and teaching of special topics related to health services research and policy;
  • Participate in activities of the academic department in which their research is based;
  • Submit research abstracts and manuscripts for publication ((1 in Year 1 and 2 in Year 2); and
  • Submit one research proposal for extramural funding of research in the 2nd Year.
