OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMS

The Institute for Healthcare Studies at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine is a leader in research and education. There are several educational programs to choose from:

Master of Science in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety (HQPS)
The relatively new disciplines of healthcare quality and patient safety have emerged as central to the development of good healthcare, and require acquisition of substantive knowledge and skills. The goal of this program is to educate the next generation of quality improvement innovators and patient safety leaders. This 18-month, part-time degree is designed for professionals currently working in the healthcare setting. The program consists of nine courses, and is classroom based.

Certificate in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety
(HQPS)
A 12-month, part-time program designed for healthcare professionals who want to acquire an in-depth overview of the fields of healthcare quality and patient safety but can not devote the time required for a full Master of Science degree. This program can be completed by students living outside the Chicago area.

Faculty Development Program in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety (HQPS)
A 12-month, part-time program designed for faculty who wish to develop the educational tools, methods and curricular approaches for integrating healthcare quality and patient safety into medical education.

The two-year, part-time, Master of Science degree program will offer a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary training of both medical doctors and pre and post doctoral diplomates to fulfill the need in the important field of health services and outcomes research.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program in Health Services Research

The purpose of the Northwestern University Health Services Research Post-Doctoral Fellowship is to help ensure that adequate numbers of highly trained individuals are available to carry out the Nation's health services research agenda in order to improve quality and safety of health care, enhance access and healthcare equity, and appraise the effectiveness of healthcare expenditures.  The program is designed for professionals with a Medical Degree (MD) or Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) who wish to gain expertise in health services research while pursuing research funding through grants and publishing their research findings.  A large part of this experience is achieved through mentor relationships between fellows and distinguished faculty mentors.  The fellowship currently requires completion of six core courses and two elective courses.  Fellows may choose to expand the scope of formal coursework in order to complete either a Masters in Public Health (MPH), a Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI), a Masters in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety at Northwestern University Graduate School, or a Masters in Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB).
